The Cresset is known for its exciting mix of live entertainment, music, comedy, theatre and spectacular panto. But our work goes far beyond the stage. Alongside our shows, we’ve built a reputation for making the arts inclusive and accessible for everyone in the region – including Peterborough’s young people.
True to the title of ‘Cresset’ – historically, a metal basket of fire that provided light and warmth as well as a place for people to congregate together – we shine a spotlight on what communities can achieve through creative collaboration. Our ethos of inclusion gives everyone a chance to get their voices heard and be involved.
We believe every young person has a creative spark. Sometimes, all they need is the right opportunities and a safe, supportive space for that fire to be ignited. The Cresset provides programmes and opportunities for young people to express themselves, build confidence and develop skills that stay with them for life.
Taking part in the performing arts can bring enormous well-being, educational and social benefits. Above all, The Cresset is a welcoming and supportive community hub where young people can connect, create, and thrive. It’s a place to have fun, learn from each other, and build amazing, lifelong friendships.

Our Performing Arts Programme is dedicated to creating opportunities for young people to be expressive and explore their individuality – whether that’s through singing, acting, movement or dance. Regardless of your background, experience or abilities, our programmes are accessible for everyone.
If you’re interested in dance, musical theatre, holiday workshops, or summer school, there are plenty of chances to get involved. Perhaps you’d like to gain experience working backstage, learning skills as a sound and lighting technician, or try your hand at set design?
We work with around 2,000 young people a year – helping participants boost their confidence, gain new skills, and create truly memorable moments.
Charitable Support
Our work with young people goes far beyond them performing in productions. As a subsidiary of YMCA Trinity Group, all our year-end profits go back into the charity’s work, which directly supports young and vulnerable people.
Together, we believe in being there for every young person in the community, supporting them and their families through difficult times, and helping to build aspirations for the future. Giving children the best start in life sets them on their path to success.
For young people, performing arts can positively impact their personal development, mental well-being, and happiness. YMCA Youth Cresset is an open-access project for those aged 11-18 years. It provides a year-round programme of activities for children to socialise and build new skills in the creative arts.
Based at The Cresset, the YMCA Community Hub is shaped around real local needs and provides a safe space for young people. Our partnership with YMCA Trinity Group enables everyone to discover who they are and what they have the potential to achieve.
