School of Rock Auditions

Following the runaway success of 2023’s Nativity the musical, School of Rock The Musical will be a full scale production, staged in The Cresset Theatre from 31st October to 3rd November 2024 for a total of 6 performances. The production will be directed by Stuart Morrison & Monique Benoiton-Smith with musical direction from Adam Pallister.

Open auditions for young performers age 10 to 18 will take place on Wed 15th and Thu 16th May 2024. Auditions for principal roles and the four adult roles will take place on Sunday 19th May 2024.

Adult performers will be asked to submit a self-tape, and a shortlist will be invited to the audition on Sunday 19th May. There are four adult roles on offer, including the lead role of Dewey Finn, made famous by Jack Black in the film version. Other adult roles are Dewey’s mild mannered best friend Ned Schneebly, Headteacher Rosalie Mullins, and Ned’s controlling girlfriend Patty. Audition information:

  • There is no cost to participate in the auditions.
  • Under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
  • A fee of £50 will be payable by ensemble performers who are cast to perform in the show – this goes towards supporting the cost of licensing and safeguarding our young performers in a professional theatre environment.
  • We want to ensure opportunities are open to everyone, and appreciate that this fee might be out of reach for some families, so children eligible for free school meals may qualify for subsidy – please contact the performing arts team parts@cresset.co.uk for more information or a confidential discussion.
  • No fee is payable by the adult performers.
  • All roles are unpaid.
  • Check-in will open 30 mins before the start of the audition, please be on time!
  • Please expect to be here for the entire time slot of 90 minutes as there may be large numbers of auditionees and we may ask to see children more than once, within the audition.
  • It will be useful for children to know the storyline of the musical and if possible, familiarise themselves with music from the show.
  • Children will be asked to perform a song from the show – materials are available to download here
  • The audition takes between 20-30 minutes and auditionees will be taught a short movement routine and will be asked to read from a script in addition to the singing.
  • We understand that auditionees may feel nervous. However, we try to keep our auditions relaxed and fun so please try enjoy the experience.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes that are suitable for dancing.
  • Auditions will take place to select the entire ensemble. We will also be casting for principal roles, and some children may be asked to return for a callback on Sunday 19th May to audition for these parts.
  • We will inform you of the outcome within 7 days after the final audition.

Performances: 31st October – 3rd November 2024

We are looking for two teams of children who will perform in alternate shows. Senior performers and principals may be selected to perform in all shows and we ask that all auditionees are available for the whole performance period.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will commence in July at The Cresset with a weekend introduction to the show, and will then take place at weekends and on Monday & Thursday evenings form September. As a professional venue and production team we strive for the highest quality in our shows, and expect performers to be available for rehearsals. If you have concerns about availability or scheduling please let us know as early as possible.
